Homemade Baby Formula

This is my gal slamming her homemade formula. She loved it! After we quit commercial formula she became such an easy, calm baby. As I publish this recipe she is six years old. She has straight teeth, no cavities, and a killer immune system.

Why I Made My Own Formula

Another challenge that sometimes comes with PCOS is the inability to lactate properly. As a new mother I was only able to produce about half of what my girl needed in a day. We quickly learned that she was intolerant of cow proteins in standard formula too. Even commercial goat milk formula caused her a great deal of indigestion and suffering. All of these factors led me to start making my own.

The recipe continued to evolve with the ever changing digestive system of a baby. Rotating certain ingredients helps diversify the nutrient profile while their little systems adapt to handle more. I’ve included all versions.

While some of the supplements mentioned in these formulas are optional, I strongly suggest adding a version of colostrum (IgG or SBI) and Saccharomyces boulardi (known for raising total IgA), daily. Both are primary immunoglobulins found in breast milk. Rotating an infant probiotic with S. boulardi included is best practice for assisting microbiome diversity in formula fed babies.

1/2 cup of filtered water (room temp or tepid warm)

1/2 cup full fat goat milk (room temp if possible)

1/2 tablespoon maple syrup powder (maple sugar)

1/2 teaspoon EFA blend (Flora 7 Sources) in the fridge (rotate with extra virgin olive oil or 1/4 tsp Cod liver oil)

1/4 teaspoon SBI Protect

1/4 teaspoon acerola powder (omit if using the mulit-vitamin drops)

1/8 teaspoon blackstrap molasses (rotate w/ one capsule desiccated liver and omit if using vitamin drops)

Only given in 1 bottle per day

Probiotics (1/3 cap of the Metagenics Ultra Flora or 1 sachet Biokult)

One drop Vitamin D drops (400 IU) or 1/4th tsp. non-flavored cod liver oil

One (1 ml) baby multi-vitamin drops

Instructions:

  • Melt coconut oil over low heat in small copper saucier that sits on the stove. Takes only a few seconds.

  • Combine milk and water in a glass one cup measure and add to the blender.

  • With the blender running on low add remaining ingredients

  • Turn blender on high for several seconds to emulsify the fats. Serve immediately.

Notes:

  1. If possible, set goat milk out and cover about 30min before to let it come to room temp so the fats emulsify better in the blender.

  2. Eyeball 1/8 teaspoon if using blackstrap molasses. Formula should look close to prepared Sammy’s Milk (goat milk formula) in color (caramel latte).

  3. Store any extra in the refrigerator and only leave it at room temperature for a few hours max.

  4. Clean and sanitize blender parts, 1 cup measure, and measuring spoons immediately after each use. Keep all dry ingredients tightly sealed. Return all ingredients to the fridge that need to be chilled (maple syrup, Flora EFA, Probiotics).

  2. If using coconut milk from a carton instead of can liquid ratio is 3 cups coconut milk, 1 cup coconut water. No regular water needed.

  3. Canned coconut milk comes with a lot of fat/cream that will not full emulsify even after blended. Open the can and skim off as much cream as possible before using. Fat will float to the top after it has rested in the fridge. This will need to be skimmed before pouring into a bottle.

  4. Clean and sanitize blender parts, 1 cup measure, and measuring spoons immediately after each use. Keep all dry ingredients tightly sealed. Return all ingredients to the fridge that need to be chilled (maple syrup, Flora EFA, Probiotics).

  • Turn the Vitamix down to 2-3 setting and while it’s running add in the rest of the ingredients. Stream in the remaining coconut/almond milk. Pour milk into the a clean 2.5 liter milk jug.

These later versions of the formula are for older babies and toddlers. By 18 months babies should only be supplementing with this formula and should be transitioning to only water and solid food.
